ROASTED PUMPKIN SOUP 🎃

According to Chinese medicine diet therapy, pumpkin is considered “warming,” unlike squash, gourds, and related fruit of the Cucurbitaceae family, which are generally considered cooling.

Because of their warming nature, pumpkins support digestion and bolster Qi. Chinese medicine diet therapy also suggests that they can be effective in reducing pain and swelling, alleviating asthma, soothing burns, and killing parasites (pumpkins seeds are a widely used medicinal in China to eliminate tapeworms).

The "food as medicine" benefits that this simple vegetable offers, underscores the broader power of Chinese diet therapy, along with the broader benefits of Chinese medicine in general.

Because pumpkins are also “sweet,” they can be very filling. To resolve this problem leeks and Thai red curry have been added to the soup. Leeks together with red curry paste, which contains chili peppers, garlic, shallots, and lime zest, add “pungency” to the soup. The dispersing qualities of these spices not only add complexity to the dominant mellow flavors but prevent bloating and abdominal fullness that might occur in other pumpkin dishes.

DIRECTIONS
Cut one or two pumpkins in half, remove the seeds, brush with olive oil and roast at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes, depending on size, and remove the skin. Roast the seeds for garnish.

Saute leeks in olive oil until just starting to brown, add roasted pumpkin and vegetable stock and simmer until mixture comes together then use a regular blender or immersion blender to completely puree.

Depending on how much moisture was still in your roasted pumpkin, you may need to adjust the amount of stock. Stir in the red curry paste and maple syrup and adjust heat and sweetness to your liking. Stir in the coconut milk adding more if you prefer it creamier and balance with a touch of apple cider vinegar. Adjust seasoning as desired.

We've all heard of the children's book 'Everybody poops', but there should be an adult version called 'what does your poop say about your health?'

If you've had a treatment with me you know I will ask you alot of questions about your bowel movments. If you haven't booked with me yet, this is what you have to look forward to.

Ideal frequency is around 1-3x/day. What goes in should come out. So for those that think 'normal' is only having a BM once every couple days, I'm here to help.

Factors that can affect digestion are stress, medications, water intake, fibre intake, exercise, laxative use and of course, diet.

The 'eat more fiber, drink more water' advice doesn't apply to everyone suffering from constipation. Sometimes this can actually make things worse.

Did you know that there's such a thing as laxative dependency? With laxative abuse, the intestines lose muscle and nerve response. The intestines then become dilated and ineffective in moving stool out. This results in dependency on the laxative, so that higher and higher doses are needed to produce stools.

The TCM organ associated with summer is the Heart. The Heart is the emperor of the human body, it governs blood and is responsible for the Shen (Mind).

The heat of summer feeds on body fluids and harms yin. It is recommended to take in predominantly cooling, yin foods to disperse heat and build up body fluids. The bitter flavor corresponds to the fire phase, and mostly bitter–cool as well as bitter–cold foods, in moderation, should be consumed. In general, choose lighter foods to avoid indigestion as per the Heart’s relationship to the Small Intestine.

Observing the cycles of nature can provide a dynamic reflection of our own health. Engaging with the environment’s seasonal transitions is an insightful way to get in tune with ourselves and the world.

Chinese Medicine believes that when treating disharmonies in the body, there is greater benefit in a seasonal approach and treatments may vary based on time of year because the body is affected by, and a reflection of, the environment around us.
